You all know the United States has 50 states, but did you know they have nicknames for each state in the country? Well, this is a long time tradition in the country and as long as I can recall from my readings and conversation there are states with more than one nickname.
In most cases the nicknames are related to the state history but there are many others in which the nickname is linked to the geographic characteristic, to the fauna, flora or to some important political issue.
Some nicknames are very curious as, for instance, The Land of Enchantment for new Mexico or The Equality or Cowboy State for Wyoming. Here you can check on a list for all those nicknames. My favorites nicknames are: Texas, the lone star state, Washington, the evergreen state and Missouri, the show me state. These nicknames are well-known in the country and they are used in vehicles license plates as you see at the side.
On this website you can find license plates from all states and know a bit more about this interesting part of American culture.
How is it in your country? Do you also hold this type of tradition? In Brazil we have 26 states and a federal district, I can say we don’t have that tradition! However, if I could suggest anything to that sense that would be something like this:

Just perfect! I didn’t know about the State Nicknames! I got a wee bit curious and I wanna know why is Piauí the gentle State?
Hem, Thanks for the reading. Remember those are names I gave to the states. I think people from Piauí are nice and gentle, that’s it!
Why ES the square state??
It’s due to its shape. Do you have any suggestion? We can change it!
