An apple a day…

It is well known that a person who regularly eats fruits and vegetables are less susceptible to diseases. In English there is this saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away“. Do you believe it? How often do you have natural food in your diet?

Let’s talk a bit about apples. The saying “As American as apple pie” is referred to as the symbol of America. The word “apple” comes from the Old English word “aeppel.” There are approximately 10,000 different kinds of varieties of apples grown in the world with more than 7,000 of these varieties grown in the United States. Apples are a member of the rose family of plants.

Curiosities about apples

  • Apple has never been mentioned in the Bible as the forbidden fruit;
  • The story of the Garden of Eden where Adam ate a piece of the forbidden fruit that got stuck in his throat. That is known as  adam’s apple, or laryngeal prominence, that actually is a protrusion in the front of the throat.
  •  An apple-shot is:  “apple shot from man’s head” .  It is best known as William Tell‘s feat.
  • Isaac Newton was, supposedly sitting under an apple tree observing an apple fall to the ground. When he saw the apple fall, he began to think about a specific kind of motion—gravity.
  • New York is known as “The Big Apple” due to the claim that in New York there was a brothel whose madam was known as Eve! It is only one of many versions for that nickname! (thanks @taalencar!)
  • Eat apple fruit as they are with skin to get maximum health benefits.
  • Sliced apple turns brown on exposure to air due to conversion in iron form from ferrous oxide to ferric oxide. If you have to serve them sliced, rinse slices in water added with few drops of fresh lemon.
  • Cloudy apple juice is a good drink with dinner.
  • Apple fruit is also used in the preparation of fruit jam, pie, and fruit salad.
  • Apple is considered the fruit of love in many western cultures.
  • The MacIntosh computer designed by Apple Inc. was named after a type of American apple.
